Who does not know the highest shipable lake in the world by its name? But many a times the tourist is disappointed by the tourist spectacle and the artifcial tourist business athmosphere world of Copacabana which is having not very much to do with the authentic Bolivia. With the present trip you get away from touristic places and have the chance of a much deeper Bolivian experience. It is up to you what you prefer.

from Sorata or La Paz to Copacabana. Everything there is adjusted to tourism. But there is something to see: The ancient meteorological observatory from pre Inca times, Inca Banderani, the splendid colonial church at the market place and so much more.

We take a motor boat to the sun island and make a beautiful three hours hike from south to north. We reach the pretty fishermans village of Challapampa in the very north of the island. Here we jump in a waiting fishermans boat and raw pretty far out. End of mass tourism.

We reach a small island. Here we prepare our camp. No people and the breathtaking scenery of the gigantic lake with ice capped Andes giants in the background. Wind and waves and silence. A beach. Feeling like Robinson.

In the middle of the night we start our sailboat trip to the opposite side of the shore. All depends on the wind which we can t command. Most outstanding sunrise in the middle of the lake with red glowing Andes Peaks in the background. No loud motor is disturbing. After a long day in the boat we are happy to land at the shore of Puerto Chaguaya. Here nothing is prepared for tourism and the natives live a slow life. The contrast between Copacabana and here couldn t be stronger. But we have to expect and accept that every western comfort is missing. The picturesque beach is outstanding.

We visit the world forgotten but really amazing colonial church of the village Carabucco with strange paintings and walk up to the hot springs of Mina Matilde. Here we can take a refreshing hot bath. Then we drive to La Paz or Sorata by four wheel drive jeep. End of the trip.
